Craftsman Toolbox and Paint Pot Cake

One of my favorite customers wanted a surprise cake for a 50th birthday party held at the Locanda Verde Restaurant on Greenwich Street in Manhattan. She requested a yellow vanilla cake with chocolate mousse filling.

The guest of honor is a DIY fanatic, so we created a red Craftsman toolbox cake, with a figurine perched on top. Inside are an assortment of tools: saw, spanner, screwdriver, measuring tape, hammer and even nails, plus a tipped over pot spilling yellow paint.

All the accessories were sculpted from sugar paste, with an edible image for the paint pot label.

Bugs and Bees Mini-cakes

It's Memorial Day weekend already, and the gardens in the Montrose Historic District are looking gorgeous, but now we have to cope with all the bugs!

However these little bugs and bees mini-cakes are just what kids love. This assortment includes the perennial favorite chocolate cake with oreo cream filling, as well as lemon cake with key lime filling for the young fruit fans. A happy looking fondant bug is settled on top of each one.

Now I need a good cup of Earl Grey tea before I get to work on the next cake order: a Louis Vuitton handbag!

Running up the Wonky Cake

I was asked to create a 50th birthday cake for a wine connoisseur and marathon runner in Montclair NJ. I designed a three-tier wonky French vanilla cake with orange chocolate cream filling. The cake was covered in dark chocolate fondant, with violet and green stripes. The tier separators were decorated with green stephanotis flowers and I encircled the lower tier with glittering purple fondant pearls. The cake sat on a chocolate fondant base wrapped in a green ribbon. It was fun designing the runner, the biggest challenge is always what to do with the arms, I opted for the victor's pose!
